Senate opposition minority is reported to have organized this week and is submitting a letter to the Senate majority demanding among other things transparency and public hearings in actions on legislation according to sources among them. It remains to be seen if the letter can be made public. This comes on the heels of the resignations last week due to fallout with Senate President
from committee chairmanship and membership of two majority members, Senators Phillip Reklai and Uduch Senior who had chaired tourism and youth affairs committees respectively since the 10th Senate was inaugurated in January. The two are said to have rejoined their former four colleagues during the caucus days before swearing in who included Camsek Chin, Regis Akita-ya, Rukebai Inabo, and Mason Whipps. This will increase the minority number to 6 versus 7 in the majority. The seven led by Senate President Hokkons Baules include VP Mark Ru-dimch, FL Kerai Mariur, Steven Kuartei, John Skebong, Frank Kyota, and Aric Nakamura. Sources say the minority had tried to put up a new leadership line up and tried to woo Sen. Kyota to jump but failing to pull, selected Sen. Senior as the minority leader.
One of the first things to demand is to hold a public hearing on the airport expansion bill especially on its financing and what happens if the project fails. The expansion calls for tourist arrival of 245,000 a year in order for the project to be viable once the expanded airport is in full operation.
